Evgeny Bunimovich, YABLOKO Federal Political Committee member and Children’s Rights Ombudsman in Moscow, has launched his new book titled “The Choice. The Sketches by a Sudden Deputy” today, 3 June. Grigory Yavlinsky, YABLOKO founder, attended the presentation which took place within a book festival on Red Square. The meeting with the readers began at noon with the chiming clock beating. Evgeny Bunimovich made a joke that only his book was presented in the non-fiction genre though the launching of another book – a three volume edition of Vladimir Putin’s speeches and articles – was taking place simultaneously.Read more »

A meeting between YABLOKO Chair Emilia Slabunova and Pavel Sulyandziga, Deputy Chair of the UN Working Group on the issue of human rights and transnational corporations and other business enterprises has taken place today. Sulyandziga signed YABLOKO’s Memorandum of Political Alternative. The consent to the document is one of the conditions one needs to accept to be nominated a party candidate for a State Duma deputy. The federal elections in Russia take place more seldom because of the machinations of the Kremlin and the [ruling] United Russia party. The State Duma elections take place once in five years, presidential – once in six years. Therefore the importance of the elections has increased considerably. If you skip the election, put up with the outrage of the authorities for the next five years. That’s why the State Duma elections of 18 September 2016 and the presidential elections of 2018 are important to everyone. Read more »

The decision of the St. Petersburg toponymic commission to name [one of the city’s] bridges after Chechnya’s first President Akhmad Kadyrov, which was obviously made in a rush and under the pressure of the St.Petersburg city administration, indicates that the authorities are not interested in the opinion of the citizens. A G7 summit – a meeting of leaders of the seven most industrialized countries of the world sharing common principles of international and domestic policies – was held in Japan past week. Russia was expelled from this community due to its aggression against Ukraine and establishment of a totalitarian order in its own territory. Therefore, Russian mass media commented on the meeting exactly in the same manner as North Korean newspapers – aggrievedly and stupidly. The Federation Council, [the upper chamber of the Russian parliament], even called the G7 an ‘uncoupled coach’. Read more »
The decision by the Russian government’s to extend the “anti-Western” food embargo until the end of 2017 can not be regarded otherwise than economic stupidity. “Beat your people to frighten all the other”. This is a familiar logic – to punish one’s own citizens for serious foreign policy errors and blunders of the authorities. Read more »
Today, 31 May, deputy Dmitry Gudkov will introduce the draft amendments to the Federal Law “On Police” made by Grigory Yavlinsky, the leader of the YABLOKO faction in St. Petersburg Legislative Assembly, to the State Duma. The draft stipulates that the premises of all the police units and police cars must be equipped with obligatory video observation. In 2013 only 2 more votes were wanted for the bill to be passed by the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg. Read more »

The upcoming 2016 parliamentary elections provoked the discussion of the key Russian election campaign – the presidential. It happened so in the past 20 years that the trajectory of the whole country depends on the presidential election. This is wrong, and this has already led to many mistakes and even tragedies, but it is like this today. The vivid part of the Russian society maintaining clear mind is looking for a political alternative, a way to break the fatal vicious circle absorbing the country. 2018 election will inevitably come after the 2016 [parliamentary] election. In March 2015 the health care workers of the public facility Pervouralsk City Hospital No.1 turned to the Sverdlovsk branch of YABLOKO. They reported that it had been planned to deprive health care workers of their salary under the pretense of healthcare reform: they were forced to go on a leave without keeping their salary. The audience is yelling, stomping feet, Mikhail Gorbachev presiding [over the congress] calls Academician to leave the tribune… Andrei Sakharov turns to Mikhail Gorbachev and says, “My mandate is not from you, I have a higher mandate – that from the people”.
