Liberals from Russia and Europe discuss liberalism
Why does a truly global economy need liberal values? Where will the growing conservative trends in Russia and Europe take us? Is the world again centred on power politics?
These were some of the questions asked at the international conference on “Liberal Values Versus a Conservative Trend in Politics and Public Life in Europe” organised by ALDE member party YABLOKO (Russian Democratic Party) in cooperation with ALDE on the 11 October 2014 in Moscow.
Welcoming speeches were made by a range of prominent speakers, followed by a video address from the ALDE Party President Sir Graham Watson. Key speakers included Party Leader Sergei Mitrokhin and Liberal International Vice President, Baroness Kishwer Falkner. The conference also featured panel discussions. Many renowned Russian experts and special European guests participated.
In her speech, Baroness Falkner noted that the Russian government has chosen self-isolation whereas the rest of the world is integrating. ALDE Vice President Olle Schmidt stressed that Russia is an important player in the European context, but that the core liberal values have been questioned both in Russia and the EU, creating problems throughout the continent.
