Grigory Yavlinsky: “15 years ago, the authorities made a choice not in favour of preserving human lives”
The “Nord-Ost” theatre production. In October 2002, I was there. I held direct talks with militants on the release of hostages. The terrorists promised to release me in exchange for Vladimir Putin’s telephone conversation with [then President of the Chechen Republic] Aslan Maskhadov. In support of their readiness, the militants released eight children. But the Kremlin had already a different plan, they were preparing an operation… During the assault, a lot of people were killed, children were killed.
The terrorist attack at Dubrovka was one of the key moments in the history of modern Russia – then the new authorities made a choice not in favor of preserving people’s lives. Two years later there was Beslan [when school children were taken hostages] with hundreds of victms… And today our country is waging two wars in the territory of other states, losing count of the victims.
What happened 15 years ago in Moscow is our common defeat, our common tragedy. No Russian politician or even a single citizen can absolve himself of responsibility for what happened. Eternal memory to the dead. Sincere sympathy and condolences to relatives and nest of kin. Strength and health for survivors.
