YABLOKO Youth participated in a rally against domestic violence
Press release, 12.02.2017
On February 12, activists of Moscow YABLOKO Youth and the Gender faction participated in a rally against the decriminalization of domestic violence. About 200 people took part in the protest action.
On January 20, the activists conducted a one person picket against the bill outside the State Duma. The bill suggests that the criminal charge of “battery within families” should be decriminalized and downgraded to the administrative offense. Offenders would only be brought to criminal responsibility if beatings took place more than one time. On February 7, Vladimir Putin signed the bill into legislation.
“We have a catastrophic situation with domestic violence, even according to official statistics (reflecting far from all cases) dozens of thousands of women, children and elderly persons become victims of domestic violence every year. In the Russian Federation 40 per cent of all grave violent crimes are committed within the family. The weakest and the most vulnerable family members – women, children, the disabled and the elderly – largely suffer from domestic violence. Dozens of thousands of victims die every year,” runs the statement released by the Gender faction.
