Boris Vishnevsky: Protest against transfer of St. Isaac’s Cathedral to the gratis use of the Orthodox Church frightened the authorities
Press release, 13.02.2017
“The authorities throw hysterics about St. Isaac’s Cathedral since they are not secure of their victory,” Boris Vishnevsky, leader of the YABLOKO faction in St.Petersburg Legislative Assembly, noted at the meeting with voters.
According to Vishnevsky, the protest actions against the transfer of St. Isaac’s Cathedral, iconic landmark of the city, to the gratis use of the Russian Orthodox Church frightened the authorities. As a result, the ruling United Russia party submitted a repressive bill which proposes that the meeting of deputies of all levels (from the municipal to parliamentary level) with voters must be held according to the law on public events.
“Our task is to preserve the museum using peaceful and lawful means,” Vishnevsky said.
About 3000 participated in the protest actions against the transfer of St. Isaac’s Cathedral to the gratis use of the Russian Orthodox Church.
