YABLOKO to commemorate victims of the Great Terror
Announcement, 28.10.2014
On October 29 YABLOKO leaders and activists will participate in the memorial action commemorating the victims of political reprisals during Stalin’s period. 30,000 people were shot in Moscow in 1937-1938.
The action takes place annually on the threshold of October 30, the Day of Political Prisoners, established in 1974 by the Soviet political prisoners who conducted hunger strikes and lit candles in memory of the victims on that day. Moreover, Sergei Kovalyov conducted a press-conference devoted to these actions of political prisoners at Andrei Sakharov’s flat on that day. The hunger strikes of political prisoners in prison camps have been taking place annually since 1974 marking a new stage in the human rights protection movement.
The participants of the action will receive the lists with the names of the Muscovites – victims of Stalin’s terror of 1937 – 1938, their age, posts and dates of execution. The activists will read the names of the victims out loud and put a candle to the Solovetsky Stone. The action will take place from 10.00 am till 10.00 pm. YABLOKO’s activists will join the action at 01.00 pm.
The action will take place by the FSB (former KGB) building at Lubyanka square, the Lubyanka metro station
