Press release, 13.04.2016
On 12 April, former Minister of the Interior of Germany Gerhart Baum gave a public lecture on freedom and security in the Boris Yeltsin Centre in the city of Yekaterinburg (the capital of the Sverdlovsk Region, the Urals). Leader of YABLOKO’s regional branch Yuri Pereverzev and party activist Elena Krasulina attended the lecture.
“The questions that Gerhart Baum is addressing to the audience are of international dimension, they are of current importance in any counrty at the moment. For instance, the right to life is as important as the right to liberty. Can one provide an acceptable level of freedom and human rights observance without sacrificing security? The tragedy of the choice between freedom and security has become one of the global challenges again just as it was about 20 years ago,” Yuri Pereverzev said.
Gerhart Baum’s book “Save civil rights: freedom and safety” was also launched during the lecture.
Gerhart Baum is a German statesman and a lawyer who has won a large number of cases on wiretapping, filing and secret access to computer database in the Federal Constitutional Court.
