Yabloko participated in a round table on gender equality organised by the Delegation of the EU to Russia

On 19th November, Yabloko Gender Faction representatives (Galina Mikhaleva, Nikolai Kavkazsky and Irina Zabelina) participated in a round table on gender equality organised by the Delegation of the European Union to the Russian Federation.
Representatives of the EU, Russian government and NPOs discussed the cooperation between NPOs and governmental bodies in gender policies implementation.
Tatyana Melnikova from Russia’s Ministry of Labour presented Russia’s National Strategy yo Promote Women’s Interests 2017-2022. She stressed that the key issues of the strategy is women’s health.
Petr Sich, Head of Programme Office of the Council of Europe, spoke about EU gender policy. He explained that the key issues of their policy are fighting stereotypes, access to education, promoting women’s participation in politics and economy as well as the policy of gender mainstreaming.
Galina Mikhaleva, Chair of Yabloko Gender Faction, explained the main difference between Russia’s and EU gender equality strategies. According to Mikhaleva, the Russian government sees women as mothers in the first place while the EU put gender equality first. “Unfortunately, Russia’s strategy lacks the main aim – to create institutes that would enable gander equality in our country,” Mikhaleva stressed.
