YABLOKO hosts Congress to discuss party strategy for new election cycle
ALDE Party member party YABLOKO hosted their latest Congress from 27 to 28 February in New Moscow to discuss the electoral strategy of the party at the 2016 parliamentary elections together with the 2018 presidential elections.
The first day of the Congress coincided with the one year since the murder of Russian opposition leader Boris Nemtsov. That is why after YABLOKO’s Chairperson Emilia Slabunova opened the Congress with a report, the Congress delegates participated in a minute of silence in memory of Nemtsov as well as in the memorial actions taking place in Moscow. For this reason the discussion of the key issues was postponed until the second day of the Congress.
On 28 February the Chair of YABLOKO’s Federal Political Committee Grigory Yavlinsky addressed the delegates with a keynote speech. YABLOKO believes that the election campaign to the State Duma is a matter of principle, but even a maximum broad faction in the Parliament will not be able to exert a considerably influence on the situation in the country. Therefore, during the Congress it was proposed to change the election strategy so that the coming parliamentary elections will be directly connected with the presidential elections and to nominate a personal alternative to the current system.
In light of this, the YABLOKO Congress supported the candidacy of Grigory Yavlinsky for the 2018 presidential elections. The candidacy is also supported by former co-chair of PARNAS Vladimir Ryzhkov and the only independent State Duma deputy Dmitry Gudkov.
In his keynote speech Grigory Yavlinsky pointed out the basis of the problems which have been following Russia over the past decades. “Today our main obstacle on the way to the future is becoming not even Putin and his system but frustration and apathy. Such rival is as serious as those who sit in the Kremlin and the State Duma. When the majority [of the people] in the country are apathetic, those who are fringes start to run the show, set and dictate the agenda,” YABLOKO founder noted.
Yavlinsky also defined the basic value which will become the foundation of his election campaign: “My key idea is that a person is above any ideology. I insist that the only true national idea for the whole Russia is Respect. Respect for a person.”
Chairperson Emilia Slabunoba proposed Yavlinsky’s candidature. “He embodies an alternative to Putin and his system, he presents an alternative image of the future, values, priorities which fundamentally differ from Russia’s politics of today. He is the leader who we trust,” Slabunova said.
She stressed that in modern political history Yavlinsky was associated with direct efforts towards the development of true democracy and competitive economy: “Grigory Yavlinsky will become the president whose foreign policy will be the policy of making friends, not enemies.”
Vladimir Ryzhkov said that the opposition must nominate a single presidential candidate. “There is no doubt that this person is fully committed to the values of democracy, liberty, peaceful foreign policy, human right and fundamental rights and freedoms. He proved it with all his life,” Ryzhkov noted.
