Yabloko Chairman urged St.Petersburg Governor to put a memorial plaque at the site of murder of antifascist Timur Kacharava
Press Release, 13.11.2020
On the 15th anniversary of the murder of anti-fascist and musician Timur Kacharava, Yabloko Chairman Nikolai Rybakov sent an appeal to the Governor of St. Petersburg, Alexander Beglov, asking him to put a memorial plaque at the site of murder of antifascist Timur Kacharava.
Timur Kacharava, St. Petersburg anti-fascist activist, musician and one of the organisers of the Food Instead of Bombs movement in St. Petersburg, was stabbed by a group of neo-Nazis near the St. Petersburg Bukvoed book-store in Ligovsky Prospekt on 13 November, 2005. The attackers were later convicted (between 2007 and 2018) to different terms of imprisonment.
Nikolai Rybakov notes in his appeal that the murder of Kacharava became one of the most tragic events in the city in the 2000s. He also notes that every year people bring flowers, candles and portraits of a Timur Kacharava to the steps of the bookstore, as well as leave the inscription “Timur, we will always remember you”, which will soon be painted over.
In his address, Rybakov recalls that the murder of Kacharava was one of the most tragic events in St. Petersburg in the 2000s. For many years, people have been gathering for commemorative actions on the day of the murder of the musician, they bring flowers, candles and his portraits to the windows of the store. Every year an inscription “Timur, we will remember you” appears on the wall, which is later painted over, and the flowers are removed.
“I consider it important to preserve this inscription and the memory of this tragic event. In our city, which survived the siege, people, like nowhere else in the world, realise what Nazism and fascism bring! I suggest that you install an information panel at the site of the murder of Timur Kacharava, copying there the indicated inscription,” Nikolai Rybakov urged, stressing that the production and installation of the panel must be carried out at the expense of the budget funds of St. Petersburg.
Today Nikolai Rybakov and Boris Vishnevsky, head of the Yabloko faction in the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg, laid flowers at the site of murder of Timur Kacharava at Ligovsky prospect 10/118.
