On 5 April, the Sverdlovsk region YABLOKO Youth conducted one-person pickets against the draft system in Russia. The street action of protest took place by the military registration and enlistment office in Yekaterinburg.
“In today’s conditions the conscription is of no use. Only corrupted officials and generals gain benefit by the draft, they use it for their own profit,” Evgeny Trenin said.
YABLOKO Youth’s actions in support of a contract-based army also took place in Novosibirsk (the Novosibirsk Region), Vladikavkaz (North Ossetia) , Stavropol (the Stavropol Territory), Yeysk (the Krasnodar Territory), Moscow and Tula (the Tula Region).
Conscription in Russia is a 12-month draft, mandatory for all male citizens age 18–27, with a number of exceptions.
