Statement on events in Russia

European Liberal Democrats are very concerned by the most recent case brought to our attention by our member party in Russia, YABLOKO, of one of their elected politicians in the Republic of Karelia, Olga Zaletskaya, in opposition, and Alexandra Kornilova, director of the Lentorng trade network, being detained by authorities. There have been an increasing number of criminal cases filed against political opponents in this region, against YABLOKO members and against politicians of other parties, which are worrying developments in any democracy. In conjunction with Sergei Mitrokhin, the leader of YABLOKO, we call for all members of the opposition in Russia to be allowed to execute their vital roles in democracy of holding those in power to account, and to be able to do so without fear.
