Sergei Mitrokhin: There’s no bicycle infrastructure in Moscow
Press Release, 22.09.2014
YABLOKO leader Sergei Mitrokhin went to work by bicycle on the International Car-Free Day, September 22. He rode about 12 kilometers through the centre of Moscow and came to the conclusion that “there’s no bicycle infrastructure in Moscow, only separate PR-fragments”.
There weren’t many bicycle riders and those who met Mitrokhin were surprised to see YABLOKO leader riding a bike.
Sergei Mitrokhin explored that the bicycle roads are absent in many places and sometimes end suddenly.
Wheelchair ramps are missing in some of the underground walkways. “How do disabled people and people with baby strollers move here?”, wondered Mitrokhin.
While cycling Sergei Mitrokhin paid attention at the fact that the roll out lawn is being laid in Moscow instead of the natural lawn. “It’s being done in a wrong way on purpose so that to lay the lawn next year again. Lots of budgetary money is spent on it and stolen.
At the newly repaired Pyatnitskaya Street (where YABLOKO office is situated) the bicycle road also ends suddenly.
YABLOKO leader emphasized that he head to enlarge his route by three times due to the absence of the bicycle infrastructure.
“The main income of today’s inspection is that there’s no system and logic of bicycle movement in Moscow, only separate PR-fragments. We stand for creation of bicycle infrastructure not only for relaxation but so that the residents of Moscow could move from one place to another, cycle to work, shopping and so on”.
“A person should be given a choice between a car, public transport and a bicycle”, said Mitrokhin.
We show the advantages of using a bike by setting the example. I call all the Muscovites to use bicycles. The more we use bicycles, the faster the normal infrastructure will appear. I hope that today’s inspection will force Moscow government to solve this issue”, concluded Sergei Mitrokhin.
