This morning, Vladimir Kimayev, leader of the Sochi branch of the YABLOKO party, had a meeting with Prime Minister of Norway Erna Solberg, where they discussed prosecution of environmental activists in the Krasnodar Territory and the sentence of the court envisaging three years of imprisonment for Evgeny Vitishko. The meeting was attended by Alexander Popkov, lawyer of Evgeny Vitishko, and Semyon Simonov, representative of the Memorial society. Read more »

Human Rights Watch calls on Olympics to help free activist Vitishko

NEW YORK, Feb. 12 (UPI) — The International Olympic Committee should urge the freeing of environmental activist Evgeni Vitishko, an international human rights group said Wednesday.
The Human Rights Watch, based in New York City, called on Olympics leaders in a statement Wednesday to pressure Russia to free Vitishko, whose three-year sentence in a penal colony was upheld Wednesday by an appeals court in Krasnodar, Russia, 170 kilometers (105 miles) northwest of Sochi, site of the Winter Olympics. Imprisonment sentence to environmentalist Evgeny Vitishko is discrediting the Olympics

Earlier today the Krasnodar Regional Court has dismissed the complaint submitted by lawyers of environmental activist Evgeny Vitishko. This means that the verdict of the court of a lower instance in coming into force. This verdict envisages a three-year imprisonment term for Vitishko due to his criticism of Governor of the Krasnodar Territory. Earlier Vitishko had been sentenced to three years of probation for making inscriptions on the fence unlawfully erected in the nature reserve. Now probation has been replaced by a real imprisonment term. Read more »
