Moscow YABLOKO Youth protested against bill on National Guard
Press release, 08.04.2016
On 8 April, YABLOKO Youth activits conducted a series of one-person pickets outside the Presidential Administration protesting against the creation of the National Guard. The activits claim that the true aim of the new structure is to suppress opposition demonstrations.
On 5 April, Vladimir Putin announced the creation of the National Guard, which, according to Putin, would fight terrorism and organised crime. The force will be headed by Putin’s former bodyguard, Viktor Zolotov, who will report directly to the President.
The National Guard soldiers will be given very broad powers. They will be granted the right to use force, non-lethal weapons and firearms without warning and enter private premises when on duty when there is a threat to the lives of civilians or National Guard soldiers.
On 7 April, the Moscow branch of YABLOKO issued a statement calling the State Duma deputies to reject the bill.
