Condolences, 8.12.2018
On 8th December, one of the founders and Chair of the Moscow Helsinki Group, Lyudmila Alexeyeva, 91, passed away. Yabloko Chair Emilia Slabunova and Chair of Yabloko Federal Political Committee Grigory Yavlinsky expressed their condolences:
Lyudmila Alexeyeva began fighting for human rights when this activity was far from being popular in the Soviet Union. All her life she was proving that human rights and freedoms are the foundation for the development of the state and society.
This idea has not become mainstream. However, Lyudmila Alexeyeva’s life is an example that the conviction that doing the right thing is necessery can be very efficient. As well as the willingness to do what you should do even if it takes a lot of time to see the result. However, there will be the result. Lyudmila Alexeyeva believed in it. And so do we.
May her memory live forever. I express my deepest condolences to all the people who feel this great loss.

Lyudmila Alexeyeva was a most dignified and noble person of our time. She a great and extremely brave Person. All her life she was acting in accordance with her conscience. She did not count on an immediate result because she realised that it would not be easy to make the human rights values mainstream on our planet. Lyudmila Alexeyeva was the picture of these noble values.
What is more, Lyudmila Alexeyeva was very kind, friendly and hospitable.
She was unique.
May her memory live forever.
