Liberals on the rise in Sweden
ALDE, 12/09/2018
On Sunday 9 September, Swedish citizens went to the polls for their general elections, after a campaign mostly dominated by the subject of how to tackle migration and violent crime.
ALDE Party member parties Centerpartiet and Liberalerna obtained good results, both successfully overcoming the threshold. Centerpartiet got 8.6% of the vote increasing its seats from 22 up to 31, while Liberalerna obtained 5.5%, holding 19 seats as in the previous term
On the one hand, Centerpartiet’s election manifestion mainly focused on three main areas: jobs, increased security and a green future.
On the other hand, Liberalerna’s campaign proposed how to change Sweden in order to get more freedom and more opportunities, particularly considering the threat of the extremists.
Both Centerpartiet and Liberalerna are part of Alliance, a center-right alliance with the Moderates and the Christian Democrats, which in sum came second with 40.3% of the vote that will be translated in 143 seats.
The center-left coalition came first but was just marginally ahead of the center-right alliance and their 40.6% does not allow them to form a government.
The third governing choice, the far-right Sweden Democrats (SD), obtained around 18% of the vote (from 13%) and will get around 62 seats.
A new government is expected to take weeks to form, with analysts predicting long and complicated negotiations to form a majority or minority coalition.
All parties have long promised not to form a coalition with the far-right party, shunned for its roots in neo-Nazi extremism, although SD leader, Jimmie Akesson said he was ready to negotiate.
