Liberal Democrats are key to the formation of a stable parliamentary majority

Speaking after the liberal prime ministers’ meeting ahead of the informal European Council, ALDE Party President Sir Graham Watson said:
“The political groups of the EPP and the PES parties lost 70 seats in the May 22-25 election. There will be 70 ALDE MEPs in the next European Parliament. Liberal Democrats will be key to the formation of a stable parliamentary majority.
The clear message from the voters in this election is that the EU needs a new agenda. We cannot go on as before. The eight European Commissioners from the ALDE Party have been key players in the recent successful EU reforms. Commissioners from our political family will also be key to continuing the process of reform to give the EU a more dynamic economy, a more just society and a more open and transparent government at EU level.
The ALDE Party therefore calls on the European Council and the European Parliament to conduct the discussions necessary for the creation of a stable majority to support the process of reforming the EU to regain the trust of all its citizens. We are ready to play our part in this process.”
