Peripheral Authoritarianism. What Russia Has Achieved and Why is a book about Russia today, more specifically, about the structure of the system hanging on Russia like a millstone around the country’s neck. The author discloses the key fact that the system does not grow inevitably from the specifics of the country. He does not argue with anyone; he simply shows how the system was created, when this happened and who created it. The current structure of the system is presented to the reader from the vigilant and professional perspective of the author as if viewed microscopically or dissected anatomically.

The reader is treated to a high resolution image devoid of emotion or hysteria, and at the same time without a shadow of indifference. The author’s concern for the country and its people does not hinder understanding, but on the contrary renders the picture more acute and profound.

It is up to the reader to draw conclusions after reading the book. Some people may find that the bitter truth adversely affects their hopes for change, while others may come away revitalized and even stronger in their push for such change. However, this is simply an accurate diagnosis. The author is convinced that this should be the starting point for any treatment.

The book “Notes on History and Politics: the People, the Country, and the Reforms” by Grigory Yavlinsky and Andrei Kosmynin is devoted to analysis of the current social and political situation and link to Russia’s past. The authors examine the cultural and historical causes of the present situation of the state and society in Russia, and claim that the policies of Russia’s leaders are the underlying reason for developments, and not the “Russian mentality” that has evolved through the country’s history or the nature of the Russian people.

The Non Fiction book fair will take place in the Central House of Artists on Krymsky Val, on 25 – 29 November. You can acquire the books by Grigory Yavlinsky from the Novaya Gazeta stand. Readers will have an opportunity to meet the author at the Press Centre of the Central House of Artists on Saturday, 28 November. The meeting will start at 14:00.
