“It was not an election, but a farce.” Boris Vishnevsky left the conference hall of the St. Petersburg parliament before the inauguration of Alexander Beglov as St.Petersburg Governor
Press Release, 18.09.2019
Boris Vishnevsky, head of the Yabloko faction in the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg, left the conference hall of the St. Petersburg parliament before the start of the ceremony of inauguration of Alexander Beglov as Governor of St. Petersburg.
“It was not an election, but a farce. Simply a reappointment of Mr. Beglov to the post of Governor. Now he is solemnly going to be inducted into this post. I will not be at this festival of United Russia and their allies. It is disgusting,” Boris Vishnevsky said.
“Everything will be bad, because the problems of the residents of the city will not be solved by a person who, in fact, is not elected by the residents, but is imposed on the city by force and deceit. He does not feel his dependence on St.Petersburg residents. But I hope that this will not be long. And there will be new elections. In completely different conditions. Do not back down or give up. We will definitely win,” Vishnevsky added.
It should be noted that there was only one issue on the agenda of the meeting of the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg on 18 September: “taking the oath by the Governor of St. Petersburg”.
Olga Pokrovskaya, member of the St. Petersburg Electoral Commission with a casting vote from Yabloko, spoke with a dissenting opinion on the approval of the results of the elections. Pokrovskaya noted that the gubernatorial elections were held with numerous violations of the law, and expressed disagreement with the decision of the electoral commission to approve the results of the election of the Governor of St. Petersburg.
Earlier Boris Vishnevsky, head of the Yabloko faction in the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg, was not allowed to run in the election of the governor of St. Petersburg due to the use the prohibitive “municipal filter” requiring him to collect signatures in his favour from municipal deputies most of whom belonged to United Russia.
Yabloko’s Federal Political Committee considers the gubernatorial elections in St. Petersburg to be pseudo-elections, does not recognise their results, as well as the governor elected though such election as the legitimate head of the city.
