Head of the Yabloko faction in the Moscow City Duma asks Putin to investigate the charges against Public Prosecutor of Moscow in corruption
Press Release, 12.11.2019
Maxim Kruglov, head of the Yabloko faction in the Moscow City Duma, sent a deputy request addressed to Russian President Vladimir Putin asking him to initiate an investigation into corruption of Denis Popov, Moscow Public Prosecutor, who became the protagonist of the investigation of the Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK).
The FBK investigation runs that the family of Denis Popov owns a hotel in Montenegro, an apartment in Spain and a house in a posh area of the Moscow region. The total value of Popov’s property may exceed EUR 3.6 million. At the same time, there was no information on this property in the declarations of the Public Prosecutor.
According to the Law on Combating Corruption, failure to provide information on property is the basis for termination of powers of an official. The President may dismiss a public prosecutor of any region on a submission for Public Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation.
Maxim Kruglov asked Vladimir Putin “to order to check the information provided [in the FBK investigation] and, if confirmed, take measures for early dismissal” of Denis Popov from his post.
In addition, Kruglov asked the President to forward the results of the investigation to the Investigative Committee and the Federal Security Service for taking a decision on institution of criminal proceedings.
