Grigory Yavlinsky: Four Questions About Flooding in the Irkutsk Region
Grigory Yavlinsky’s Telegram Channel, 4.07.2019
Over a week they have been struggling with the consequences of terrible flooding in the Irkutsk region. It is already known about 20 dead and 15 missing, 6.700 houses and 32,000 people are in the disaster area, over 2.500 people are evacuated.
My deep and sincere condolences to all the families and next of kin of the victims.
Patience and God’s help to anyone who is looking for and waiting for missing relatives. I would like to hope that the number of victims will not grow.
A week has passed. I do not know whether we believe the official data. Very important questions arise:
– Why did the dam built only ten years ago could not withstand three days of rain?
– Why is it allowed to cut down forests in the areas that are critical for the environment?
– Why the prompt warning system does not function in the areas with increased risk of flooding?
– Why are local authorities helpless?
There are no answers.
