Press Release, November 21, 2013
Imprisoned human rights activist Prof. Mikhail Savva who is now under trial in Krasnodar told YABLOKO leader Sergei Mitrokhin that convicted residents of the Krasnodar Territory falling under release on parole or amnesty could be released only after the Sochi Olympic Games. Prof. Savva got this information from his source in the remand prison.
According to Savva, the prison administration offered to the convicts to apply on release on parole only after the Sochi Olympics. The convicts were also warned that event if they fall under the amnesty prepared for the 20thanniversary of the Russian Constitution in December 2013, they may be released only after the Olympic Games.
“It is unprecedented in the history of Olympic Games when such a loud sporting event leads to prolongation of terms of imprisonment,” resented Mitrokhin.
