Press Release, 19.03.2019
On Sunday, 24 March, a rally “Free Elections for St.Petersburg!” will be held. The rally is marking the 30th anniversary of the first free elections to the Supreme Soviet [parliament] of the USSR.
30 years ago, on 26 March, 1989, the first for the entire Soviet history free elections of deputies were held in the USSR: 750 deputies out of total 2,250 were elected from territorial districts, the same number was elected from public organisations and national-territorial districts. Historians call the 1989 election the first democratic election in Soviet history.
Yekaterina Kuznetsova, head of the Yabloko branch in the city, and Boris Vishnevsky, head of the Yabloko faction in the St.Petersburg Legislative Assembly, are representing the St. Petersburg branch of Yabloko in the organising committee of the rally.
The rally will be held on Lenin Square and will begin 14:00.
