A war against food was declared in our country a year ago. On July 29, 2015, the President signed a decree “On Certain Special Economic Measures Aimed to Provide Security of the Russian Federation”, actually, aimed at destroying food brought from the countries which fall under [Russia’s] counter sanctions.

Rosselkhoznadzor [Russia’s agriculture watchdog] has recently reported on the implementation of the plan for destruction of products within the last 7 months of the year: 801 tons of food were destroyed. Experts have divided the volume of the destroyed products into a norm of energy value contained in a meal. It turned out that 26 tons of destroyed cheese would, for example, allow to feed all the residents of Serpukhov [the Moscow Region, the number of inhabitants: 126,586]. 24 tons of dairy products were enough to serve the residents of Norilsk [the Krasnoyarsk Territory, the number of inhabitants: 177,506] with lunch; 19 tons of fish could feed the city of Vorkuta [the Republic of Komi, the number of residents: 59,231]; 635 tons of fruits and berries could feed 600 thousand people – the size of population of the Khabarovsk city [the Khabarovsk Territory]; 95 tons of vegetables could serve the residents of Severobaykalsk [the Republic of Buryatia, the number of inhabitants: 23,944] with lunch.

In total, 2,5 thousand tons of food-stuffs were destroyed in a year. If we calculate how much it is in accordance with the same methodology, it turns our that these food-stuffs could provide three meals a day for a city with over a million of residents.

If one remembered about the orphans, whose number is over 360 thousand in our country, one could  feed them for three days.

Recently it has become known  that the orphans of the Rostov Region get one glass of juice once in two weeks.  At the same time, 135 tones of apples from Macedonia were destroyed in this very Rostov Region.

There are 33 disposal grounds for food destruction on the territory from Kaliningrad to Vladivostok. In a country which survived the siege of Leningrad, the famine of 1930s and 1940s, where people know the worth of every crumb of bread. It is immoral. It is a crime. The government must take responsibility for the war which it has declared against their own people, not the food.
