Press Release, 7.12.2022
On 6 December, the Yabloko Party University held a lecture “February? Bourgeois? Democratic? Revolution?” about the history of the revolution in Russia in 1917. The lecturer was Boris Kolonitsky, professor at the European University at St. Petersburg and a leading researcher at the St. Petersburg Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The history of the Russian revolution of February 1917 continues to be highly ideologically charged: our contemporaries continue to identify themselves with the political actors of 100 years ago. At the same time, people of different views, although they assess the significance of the revolution in different ways, continue to use some schemes of Soviet historiography. The lecturer presented some “obvious” interpretations of the history of the revolution.
With whom were the protagonists of the events of 1917 identified in Russia? What features of the language were inherent in the contemporaries of the Bolshevik coup and what symbols were used by the new government? Why did the epithets “February”, “bourgeois”, “democratic”, “revolution” not only raise questions among historians, but were also questioned by witnesses of the events? Boris Kolonitsky answered these and other questions.
