Activists sent letter to Bolotnaya Square rally case prisoners
Press Release, 07.05.2014
The Saratov branch of YABLOKO participated in a rally in support of the Bolotnaya Square case prisoners on May 6, the second anniversary of disruption of a peaceful rally by riot police at Bolotnaya Square, Moscow.
Under YABLOKO’s proposal the participants of the rally sent a letter to Bolotnaya Square rally case prisoners proposing to ask Putin to pardon them without the admission of guilt.
The Bolotnaya Square Criminal Case followed a peaceful protest against election fraud and Putin’s inauguration on May 6, 2012. According to eyewitnesses, the riot police suddenly blocked the way to Bolotnaya square where the sanctioned rally was planned to take place, thus provoking a clash with the protesters. More than 400 people were detained and beaten by riot police that day. A criminal case was opened later. The Investigative Committee have established 27 suspects and two of them have already been sentenced to 2.5 years and 4.5 years imprisonment. Well-known human rights defenders, politicians and civil activists claim the case is politically motivated.
