The leader of Yabloko urged deputies of the State Duma to vote against the law stipulating killing of homeless animals and sent MPs a letter with the story of his dog taken from a shelter
Press Release, 12.05.2023
Chairman of the Yabloko party, Nikolai Rybakov, sent to deputies of the State Duma a postcard with a picture of his dog Morty and his history, as well as a urged MPs to vote against the law allowing killing of homeless animals. Each member of the State Duma will receive this postcard before voting.
“This is my dog and my friend, a Hunt Terrier Morty. I adopted him from a shelter, he was all scarred – you can see what kind of life he had. If the law allowing to kill homeless animals in the [Russian] regions is adopted, then you will condemn the such dogs, as Morty, to death,” Rybakov writes.
Rybakov also emphasised that the idea of killing domestic animals that are left without supervision is contrary to the most basic principles of humanity and mercy.
Yabloko realises that there is a problem of homeless animals and have developed a special programme to solve it. The party’s proposals and letters calling for the bill to be withdrawn were sent to deputies on 3 May.
Shortly the State Duma will have the first reading of amendments to the law on the responsible treatment of animals (project No. 335106-8). If MPs accept these amendments, then the regional authorities will be allowed, among other things, to kill homeless animals. Yabloko urges deputies to vote against this bill.
