Press Release, 22.12.2021
An exhibition Citizen Poster has opened in the Moscow office of the Yabloko party. The exhibition features posters of Russian artists Yuri Leonov, Konstantin Geraimovich, Ivan Ostrovsky, Yevgeny Dobrovinsky, Mark Levin and Maria Novikova, representing the creative group Poster Square.
Yabloko Chairman Nikolai Rybakov spoke about two associations that the exhibition caused him. The first is the association with the modern Hermitage museum.
“Another association is like this: if you take any of the posters presented at the exhibition, and come up to a metro station with such a poster, then you will immediately find yourself in a police department,” Rybakov said.
Rybakov also noted that it is important not to forget about hard times and tragic events, because as soon as they are forgotten, they return.
The artist Konstantin Geraimovich emphasised that the works presented at the exhibition were the works about painful things. According to Geraimovich, the poster used to be part of the street design, but now it ceased to be such.
Maria Novikova said that a poster represented a dialogue between the artist and society.
“The social and political poster raises topics that you don’t always want to bring up,” the artist said.
A significant part of the exhibition features works by Ivan Ostrovsky on social and political topics.
Posters by Yuri Leonov are devoted to the topic of electricity tariffs.
The works by Yevgeny Dobrovinsky have a special place at the exhibition, they are full of sarcasm and demonstrate critical thinking.
Mark Levin immortalised the memory of Acad. Andrei Sakharov in the rock, and Svetlana Dyomina outlined the right of every citizen to make decisions as concerns his/her health.
Maria Novikova made a poignant poster about Afghanistan with just two colours, and Sergei Karakashev touched up the paradoxes of the human soul.
The works by Konstantin Geraymovich who presented hand-drawn posters, both recently made and posters of the late 1980s and early 1990s, have never been exhibited until 2021.
We invite you to visit the exhibition where you will see the works of the masters of the Russian poster, which has always been famous for its sharpness and topicality!
The exhibition will be open to visitors on 22 – 28 December and on 10 – 22 January from 10:00 to 19:00.
Address: Moscow, Pyatnitskaya 31, building 2.
