Today, Teodor Shanin, outstanding social scientist and founder of the Moscow Higher School of Social and Economic Sciences (“Shaninka”) passed away in his 90th year.
Nikolai Rybakov, Chairman of the Yabloko party:
Teodor Shanin was an amazing person, with a fate extraordinary even for the 20th century. His strength of mind, intellectual power, independence and ability to practically conduct business are fascinating. “Shaninka”, his brainchild in Moscow, has become one of the best education and research centres. I am sure that it will continue working, despite all the difficulties, and will preserve the traditions laid down by its founder, as well as the atmosphere of free-thinking and intellectual celebration.
I strongly advise you, in memory of this great person, to read the book by Alexander Arkhangelsky “The Dissenting Teodor”.
Grigory Yavlinsky, Chairman of the Yabloko Federal Political Committee:
Theodore Shanin was an outstanding man and a great scientist. He was an independent and original thinker.
Russia was a very important country in his life. He was attracted to the country. He felt bound to help our country specifically and at a practical level in the most difficult moments, first of all intellectually, because he was fully aware of Russia’s potential. We will always be grateful to him. I knew him personally and will never forget the strong impression that this extraordinary individual made.
May we never forget and always be thankful to Theodore Shanin.
