Yabloko on the runoff mayoral elections in Novosibirsk
Press release based on a statement by the Novosibirsk branch of Yabloko, 16.10.2018
The Novosibirsk branch of Yabloko released a statement putting forward an initiative to reintroduce mayoral runoff elections. The statement was addressed to Novosibirsk Mayor Anatoly Lokot and city parliament MPs.
According to Yabloko, mayoral election runoff in Novosibirsk was cancelled in 2013. The decision was followed by mass public protest.
“Novosibirsk needs runoff elections so that residents could fully express their opinion. It is not enough to have protest voting – it should be a deliberate decision. Runoff elections provide voters with an opportunity to make a calculated decision. This way, the elected mayor will gain voters’ trust.
We kindly ask you to support the initiative, take the mistake that was made in 2013 into account, and reconsider this issue.
We would also ask public organisations and mass media representatives to join the campaign for the reintroduction of mayoral runoff election in Novosibirsk,” runs the statement signed by Svetlana Kaverzina, Chair of the Novosibirsk branch of Yabloko.
