Yabloko demanded that Putin dismiss Zolotov and that Prosecutor General’s Office bring charges against him
Press release, 14.09.2018
Yabloko Chair Emilia Slabunova sent a letter to President Vladimir Putin demanding that he dismiss head of Russia’s National Guard Viktor Zolotov. On Tuesday the official challenged opposition politician Alexei Navalny to a duel promising to make a ‘juicy steak’ of him. The statement was published on Russia’s National Guard official website.
According to Yabloko leader, Zolotov’s statement can be considered as violation of paragraph 2 Articles 119 of Russia’s Criminal Code (threat of murder or infliction of grave injury to health committed by reason of political hatred or enmity) or Article 286 (exceeding official authority) or Article 282 (incitement of hatred or enmity, as well as abasement of human dignity with the threat to use violence committed by a person through his official position).
Slabunova claims that a high ranking official must not respond to the allegations of corruption with a physical intimidation.
The politician believes that statements like this coming from a head of a federal governmental body pose a threat to the civil society, destroy Russia’s statehood and show the government’s true face.
Yabloko Chair also demanded that Prosecutor General Yuri Chaika check whether Zolotov’s statements violate the law.
