Boris Vishnevsky and Alexander Kobrinsky filed a lawsuit against St.Petersburg authorities after their ban to conduct rallies in the city centre
Press Release, 31.08.2017
Boris Vishnevsky and Alexander Kobrinsky filed a law suit on acknowledging the decision of the Government of St. Petersburg to deprive Marsovo Polye (Field de Mars, a square in the city centre) of its status of St.Petersburg’s “Hyde Park”, a square where rallies are allowed.
The plaintiffs are residents of the city, Boris Vishnevsky, head of the YABLOKO faction in the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg, and Alexander Kobrinsky, member of the Federal Bureau of the party, allude to the decision of the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation of February 14, 2013, which directly points out the inadmissibility of “determination of only few special places [where freedom of speech and freedom of assembly may be exercised] for a subject of the Russian Federation”.
Prior to the entry into force of the Government Decree on the withdrawal of the status of a “Hyde Park” from Marsovo Polye, only five out of 18 districts of St. Petersburg had specially designated places for holding public events. Now, in violation of the decision of the Russian Constitutional Court, only four such remain for 5.3 million St.Petersburg residents.
