YABLOKO honoured the memory of lawyer Stanislav Markelov and journalist Anastasia Baburova killed by neonazist
Press Release, 19.01.2016
On 19 January, YABLOKO leaders and activists laid flowers to the place where lawyer Stanislav Markelov and journalist Anastasia Baburova were killed by neonazists – at 1 Prechistinka street. Markelov and Baburova were murdered in the centre of Moscow in plain daylight on 19 January 19, 2009, shot in the head by a gunman.
“Seven years have passed since Markelov and Baburova were murdered. Murders connected with nationalism, fascism, the murder of Boris Nemtsov a few steps away from the Kremlin – all this shows that the situation in the country has become more dangerous for the people who have their own point of view and political stance”, YABLOKO founder Grigory Yavlinsky said.
According to Chair of the Moscow branch of YABLOKO Sergei Mitrokhin, the death of Markelov and Baburova brought the opponents of fascism together.
“Once again we come here, to Prechistinka street, to the place where these wonderful people were killed, we consider them the heroes of Russia. Markelov and Baburova were murdered because of their stance. They fell victims in this fight but their death consolidated the enemies of fascism. We will always remember them,” he said.
YABLOKO deputy Chair Nikolai Rybakov emphasized that that day such actions took place in other cities of Russia as well.
“Unfortunately, today we pay tribute to the memory of not only Markelov and Baburova. We remember Larisa Yudina and Yuri Shchekochikhin, the journalists who were murdered because of their work. They were murdered because they were trying to make our country more honest and open,” Rybakov said.
“Everytime a high-profile murder takes place in our country, one can hear a cliche that we are waking up in a new political epoch. I am afraid it is not like this. We remain in the same political epoch where Alexaner Men, Galina Starovoytova, Dmitry Kholodov, Vladisalv Listyev, Yuri Shchekochikhin, Larisa Yudina, Farid Babayev, Anna Politkovskaya, Natalya Estemirova, Sergei Yushenkov, Boris Nemtsov were murdered within the last 25 years,” noted Alexander Gnezdilov, YABLOKO deputy Chair.
YABLOKO annually conducts actions in memory of Markelov and Baburova.
