Regional and local elections in Russia
The ALDE Party, Press Release, August 27, 2013
As reported last week in Liberal Eyes, 2014 is going to be an important year in European history culminating in the European Parliamentary elections next May. The busy election timetable gets underway right at the start this September, with national elections in Germany, Austria and Norway.
September the 8th is also a crucial day in Russia, with elections being held in 70 of the country’s 83 regions. 16 regional authorities, eight governors and ten mayors will be chosen as part of the polls, with the most high-profile and closely-followed being the race to choose the mayor of Moscow. Commentators rate the election of Moscow’s mayor as the third most important in the country in terms of importance and influence on the country’s politics.
The chairman of ALDE member party Yabloko, Sergei Mitrokhin, is one of six candidates standing for the position of mayor of the capital. There will be an in-depth interview with Mr Mitrokhin in Liberal Eyes ahead of the polls on Sunday, September the 8th.
