Relatives of people serving sentences in penal colony No. 6 near Sebezh, the Pskov region, contacted Artur Gaiduk, MP of the Pskov Regional Assembly from Yabloko. They complained about the unfair wages of their relatives. After all deductions, only 600-900 roubles are credited to the convicts’ accounts for a month of hard physical labour.
However, according to the law, the salary of a convict who has fully worked the standard time must not be lower than the minimum wage (19,242 roubles since 1 January, 2025), and after deductions, no less than 25% of the total amount must be credited to the worker’s account.
Artur Gaiduk wrote an appeal to the Pskov Region Public Prosecutor’s Office with a request to check the actions of the penal colony management and assess the lawfulness of such calculations of the prisoners’ salaries.
The labour of convicts must not turn into exploitation. Even while in prison, a person should receive money for his work, Artur Gaiduk deputy wrote on his social networks.
