On the responsibility of journalists
Decision by the Yabloko Federal Political Committee of 24 March 2023

The stand of journalists is of particular importance in the conditions of the special military operation, total government propaganda and censorship. Today the key political and value-based choice depends on how your word turns the scale: either for the continuation of bloodshed and destruction, or for the preservation of human lives and the desire for peace.
The position “above the battle” that has become familiar to many Russian journalists turned out to be a factor in the creation and development of a criminal-monopoly corporate political system and an oligarchic economy. This position largely contributed to the depoliticisation of society, the spread of the “learned helplessness” syndrome, and people’s disbelief in the ability to influence the actions of the authorities.
Such a position under the current conditions virtually supports the continuation of hostilities.
However, in the current military-political circumstances, neither side will gain any “victory”. The cost of the impending months of continued hostilities in the form of spring-summer offensives and counter-offensives will amount to thousands of lives, blood, grief, human suffering, and the increasing risk of the use of nuclear weapons. Calls for more bloodshed, whatever the purpose, represent a form of complicity in killing people.
In today’s situation, there is no other way out than to demand an immediate ceasefire agreement as the first step towards stopping the bloodshed. It is the professional and human duty of Russian journalists to support this demand and the political forces advocating it.
The Yabloko Party expresses its respect and solidarity to all journalists who continue telling the truth and calling for peace after 24 February, 2022. Let us all together stop killing people!
Grigory Yavlinsky,
Chairman of the Federal Political Committee of
the Yabloko Party
