Grigory Yavlinsky on Russia’s thirty year long journey: “There has always been a choice. It remains even today”

Speaking about the reasons for what happened to Russia in February 2022, analysing the path traveled over three decades and looking for answers to the question of how to find a future for our country, it is extremely important to understand that everything that happened was not inevitable. Over the past 30 years, at every stage, there was an alternative, an opportunity to move along the path of creating a modern state and a modern market economy.
Alternatives for the solution of the key tasks of Russia’s development – professional, economically sound, based on knowledge of history and understanding of the situation in our country – were really offered at virtually all the key moments and the most important periods of post-Soviet history. In the early 1990s, there was an alternative reform programme focused on the creation of an efficient market economy and the interests and needs of Russian citizens. In subsequent years, there were action-oriented proposals for resolving political crises at the most acute moments, there were professional, detailed programme alternatives to the ongoing socio-economic policies and political course worked out by experts and specialists.
Beginning in 1990, alternative proposals were transferred directly to the authorities, as a rule, they were handed over and explained directly to the first persons of the state – Boris Yeltsin and Vladimir Putin. Alternative proposals for the development of the country and the construction of a modern efficient economy were presented to the public eleven times as election programmes for parliamentary and presidential elections.
Thus, there has always been a choice. It remains even today.
