On 27 April 27, Chairwoman of the Yabloko Gender Faction and Doctor of Political Sciences Galina Mikhaleva will take part in a round table on the role of women in Russian politics, which is organised by the regional branch of the party in Novgorod. Anna Cherepanova, Deputy Chair of the Yabloko party and deputy of the Novgorod City Duma will also take part in the event.

In Russia, women make up the majority of the population amounting to over 78 million. However, women have a low level of representation in real public policy at the decision-making level. There are only 17% women in the State Duma, and there is only one female Governor in the country. Meanwhile, there are 47% women in parliament in Sweden and Finland, 40% in Denmark and 35% in Germany.

Women’s representation in local government bodies is more noticeable. Thus, the share of women in the Novgorod City Duma is 37%, but this does not lead to a qualitative change in politics. Women from the pro-government United Russia vote obediently and do everything that United Russia men propose to them.

Yabloko invites all those interested in the topic to take part in the discussion, regardless of gender. We will discuss how to increase the representation of women in the state and local government bodies, how to make sure that women participate in politics on an equal basis with men, and do not play supporting roles and are not just extras.
