YABLOKO lit up 1,418 candles in memory of the Second World War
Press Release, 22.06.2014
YABLOKO’s leaders, party activists and Moscow citizens took part in a memorial action “1,418 candles per every day of the war” commemorating the victims of the Second World War. The action was held in Moscow at night from June 21 to June 22 (the day the USSR was attacked by Hitler’s troops).
The war lasted for 1418 days and exactly this number of candles were lit. Anyone could join YABLOKO’s action. Parents and their children, senior citizens and passersby joined YABLOKO activists and lit candles in memory of the great sorrow. The rain didn’t stop the participants of the action.
“The action “1,418 candles per every day of the war” has become traditional for the YABLOKO party and has been held in Moscow for several years already. We lit 1418 candles in memory of those dew to whom we live nowadays. We will always remember it, and our duty to the victims of the war is not to let such tragedies happen again,” said YABLOKO leader Sergei Mitrokhin.
“This day is especially symbolic. It symbolizes the beginning of an open and direct fight against fascism and liberation of both Russia and the whole Europe from fascism. On this day people should think over what does a true heroic thing mean and and what does true fascism mean so that not to mix up political provocations, adventures and ambitions with heroism and the true feat of the great nation,” said YABLOKO founder, member of its Political Committee Grigory Yavlinsky.
