Victor Sheynis on MP Mizulina’s initiative to introduce Orthodox Christianity as Russian Constitution basis
Press Release, November 23, 2013
The Constitution of the Russian Federation may be amended as the word ‘Orthodox Christianity’ may be included in the main law of Russia. Deputy of the State Duma, head of the Committee on Family, Women and Children Elena Mizulina proposed to include the words that “Orthodox Christianity is the basis of Russia’s national and cultural identity” in the Constitution.
One of the authors of the Russian Constitution, member of YABLOKO Political Committee Victor Sheynis commented on the situation.
“I don’t want to be rude, but I can call Elena Mizulina’s Initiative nothing but nonsense. I see no need in including a scientific problem, which should be discussed, in the Constitution. What identity does she mean? I took part in a meeting devoted to the 20th anniversary of the Russian Constitution and, in general opinion, the best way was not to change the Constitution. First of all, the common sense may suffer. In the second place, if we focus on some identity in Elena Mizulina’s interpretation, Russia’s sensible commitment to the European choice will suffer”.
