Supreme Court of Finland made a decision on the possibility of extradition of one of Karelia YABLOKO leaders Vasily Popov
19.02.2016
A criminal case has been filed against him in Russia.
“The party will apply every effort to ensure Popov’s safety and will prove that the prosecution against him is politically motivated,” Emilia Slabunova commented.
Vasily Popov is accused of organising the sale of Petropit building which allegedly resulted in the damage to the city budget.
At the same time, the sale of the building was sanctioned by the city court twice, and the criminal case was filed only a year and three months later when Galina Shirshina was elected Mayor of Petrozavodsk with the support of Vasily Popov. The date of the criminal case initiation and the searches at the apartments of Popov’s companions coincided with Mayor Shirshina’s report on her performance on the post for 2013.
The Memorial human rights group announced that the case was politically motivated.
Vasily Popov is one of the leaders of YABLOKO in the Republic of Karelia which is the main opponent of Governor of Karelia Alexander Khudilainen. One of these days Khudilainen received a censure form President of Russia for his failure to implement the programme on relocation of citizens from unfit housing facilities.
