Stavropol YABLOKO conducted rally against law on offending feeling of religious believers
Press release, 12.04.2016
On 11 April, the Stavropol branch of YABLOKO conducted a rally in support of Victor Kransnov who is charged with offending the feelings of religious believers. The rally was organised by Kirill Bobro, local YABLOKO Youth leader.
Over 30 people participated in the street action of protest and demanded that Article 148 of the Criminal Code – “public actions that express clear lack of respect for society and are carried out with the aim of insulting the religious feelings of believers” – must be abolished.
YABLOKO claims that Article 148 violates the Constitution as Article 14 clearly states that the Russian Federation is a secular state.
The criminal case was filed in February 2015 after several complaints about Krasnov’s ironic comments on the Bible and a reply “There is no God!” on Russia Vk social media. Krasnov may face up to a year of imprisonment.
