Liberal International, July 20, 2009
Reactions of outrage followed after Natalya Estemirova, a prominent human rights activist in Chechnya, was found murdered yesterday. Estemirova is the third human rights activist killed in the Russian federal republic in three years. Sergei Mitrokhin, the leader of Russian LI Full Member party Yabloko released a statement stressing that ‘the murder of Natalya Estemirova [is] a direct consequence of governmental policies in the Northern Caucasus and in Russia in general. The truth is that systematic violations of human rights – that Natalya Estemirova had been opposing for many years – are still taking place there.
