Press Release, 23.09.2019
The team of the Novgorod Yabloko organised and conducted a series of pickets against the imports of garbage from Moscow and St. Petersburg into other regions. The protest action was held in Novgorod and Okulovka.
Anna Cherepanova, Chairperson of the Novgorod branch of Yabloko and MP in the City Duma of Novgorod, noted that the Novgorod region risks becoming a landfill for Moscow and St. Petersburg.
“According to our information, garbage from Kolpin is already being imported into the Novgorod region; the authorities are conducting an auction on a landfill rental for ten years in Okulovka. Residents express mistrust of the authorities. We live here and therefore it is important to work together to change the course of the garbage reform, only by joining together we can get rid of garbage in our country,” Anna Cherepanova emphasised.
It should be noted that on 12 September, rallies, demonstrations, mass and one-person pickets were held against the construction of an ecotechnological park in the Arkhangelsk region for importing and storing garbage from Moscow, against the construction of waste processing complexes of hazard classes 1 and 2 in Izhevsk and Kirov near settlements and in dangerous proximity to water reservoirs, , as well as consturction of incinerators in Kazan and in the Moscow region. The protesters demanded from the goverment to spend money on modern technologies for separate collection and processing of waste.
