The military operation in Syria has been stopped suddenly. Why it was put to an end raises as many questions as the reason why it had been started. Nothing has actually changed in Syria: the Islamic State is staying where it was, Bashar al-Assad’s position remains nearly the same, the negotiations with the opposition have not given any results yet and the armistice is very fragile. The Russian military bases will be preserved there. Are they going to withdraw a few thousand people within five months? Curiously enough. Read more »

The decision to withdraw the Russian Armed Forces from Syria raises as many questions as the decision to bring them there. The task to liberate 100 per cent of the Syrian territory from the control of the Islamic State, which is outlawed in Russia, and similar terrorist alignments which was claimed the goal of the operation was not fulfilled. At the same time, the side effects of the operation turned out to be too serious: the level of threat to the lives of Russian citizens on behalf of terrorists has raised considerably, tourism has experienced damage because the flights to Egypt and Turkey were grounded, the customs war with Turkey has undermined the business of many Russian entrepreneurs, [Russia] has damaged the relations with the countries where the majority of the population is represented by the Sunnis. Besides, according to the different estimations, one day of military operations cost from 4 to 8 million dollars of budget money. Taking the difficult economic conditions in the country into consideration, the appropriateness of these expenses with such unclear results raises doubts. Read more »

According to a new survey by the independent Levada Center pollster, Grigory Yavlinsky is the most recognisable democratic politician who can participate in the elections. 44 per cent of those questioned in the poll recognised Yavlinky’s surname. Read more »

Present Russia’s Human Rights Ombudsperson Ella Pamfilova will chair the Central Election Commission and will retire from the post of Ombudsperson which she held since 2014. The issue who will succeed Panfilova in this post has not been resolved yet, but YABLOKO representatives are often mentioned among possible contenders. Read more »

The Supreme Court of the Russian Federation introduced a bill on decriminalisation of Articles 115, 116 (intentional infliction of light injury which has temporarily damaged health or caused an insignificant stable loss of general capacity for work and battery) and Article 119 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (threat of murder or infliction of grave injury to health). According to the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation, the following articles must be withdrawn from the criminal legislation and included into the Administrative Violations Code. Read more »

The Russian United Democratic party YABLOKO claims that the trial of Nadezhda Savchenko is revenge and reprisal. Although, the death of the two unarmed people must be investigated carefully and objectively, in practice the trial has zero reputation for a score of reasons: nobody takes it as JUSTICE. Nadezhda Savchenko’s references, including evidently equitable applications,such as for instance the application for transferring the trial to Voronezh, were not satisfied. Read more »
