On October 7, YABLOKO leader Sergei Mitrokhin was brutally arrested during YABLOKO’s annual peaceful action of laying of flowers commemorating the victims of the Bolsviks’ terror – officers and students of military schools who defended democratic Russia against the Bolsheviks’ coup in 1917. Mitrokhin was released after several hours of arrest only after interference of Andrei Babushkin, famous human rights defender in Russia and member of the Presidential Council for the Development of Civil Society and Human Rights.

YABLOKO commemorated victims of the Great Terror

YABLOKO leaders and activists participated in the annual memorial action commemorating the victims of political reprisals during Stalin’s period. The action was organised on the threshold of October 30, the Day of Political Prisoners, established in 1974 by Soviet political prisoners who conducted hunger strikes and lit candles in memory of the victims on that day. The action took place near the FSB (former KGB) building at Lubyanka square by the Solovetsky stone which had been brought from the Solovetsky Islands, the location of the Solovki prison camp which was part of the Soviet Gulag system.

A superior court satisfied Vitishko’s appeals

Today, October 8, the Tambov regional court annulled the decision of the inferior Kirsanovsky district court (court of the first instance) on the refusal to release on parole Evgeny Vitishko, environmentalist from the Sochi region and YABLOKO member, and the refusal to amnesty him in connection with the 70th anniversary of the Victory over Nazi Germany in the World War 2. The Tambov regional court ruled out to send the case for reconsideration to the same Kirsanovsky district court. Read more »

Federal Security Service proposals on closing property registers are unacceptable

The Federal Security Service of Russia (FSB) proposed an initiative of closing public access to public registers of property rights, including real estate, aviation and water transport. At present register information is available to all, but tomorrow it will be available only to the “competent authorities”. YABLOKO considers this initiative corruption prone and destructive for a transparent modern state and urges to abandon it. Read more »

On 3 October, on the day of celebration of the 120th anniversary of great Russian poet Sergei Yesenin in his hometown Konstantinovo, police detained Valentin Gavrilov, 77, honorable architect of Russia and a person who survived the siege of Leningrad in 1941 – 1944.
