Grigory Yavlinsky on the dangerous partnership between Russia and Saudi Arabia and “Putin’s political post-modernism”, 09.10.2017
Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs already called the meeting between Putin and Saudi Arabia’s King an epochal event. It is true that the President of Russia met another civilization, the feudal epoch, in the Kremlin. This is probably the reason why the meeting was characterized as epochal. Putin’s Russia is immersing in this epoch, in feudalism, deeper and deeper. Recently Saudi Arabia was Russia’s gravest enemy, and now the “friendly” relations between the countries that suddenly intensified are as exotic as dangerous. Read more »

Liberal International, 13.10.2017 By Nikolai Kavkazsky, member of YABLOKO Federal Council, lawyer of the Stimul Moscow LGBT+ Initiative Group and Board member of the “For the Civil Rights” Committee
After Vladimir Putin came to power, the situation with human rights in Russia began to steadily deteriorate. Repressive laws were adopted, many independent media outlets were closed, political and human rights organisations found themselves subject to intense pressure, an administrative resource has been used in elections and voting results have often been falsified. Thousands of political prisoners are in prisons convicted for their participation in peaceful actions and commentaries in social networks. The authorities even resort to political murders of their opponents. Simultaneously, the ruling regime has been fueling hatred against the dissenting and LGBT+ with the help of television propaganda. Today the President of Russia Vladimir Putin has dismissed another governor – Pavel Konkov, the Ivanovo Region. He is the 10th governor to be dismissed within the last two weeks. It seems likely that the provisional governors appointed by the Kremlin will go through the election procedure without leaving any alternative and will proceed with their obligations on a regular basis. The election itself will take the form of a referendum on trust – a real competition for the votes is almost nowhere to be expected. The appointees are mainly the so called “young technocrats”, whose will is tested by jumping off a cliff. This type of officials is gradually excluding the “political heavyweights” of 1990s and “effective managers” of 2000s from the gubernatorial field. However, we can hardly expect any changes in the absence of political competition. This is why Yabloko and Grigory Yavlinsky, Yabloko’s presidential candidate, initiated the collection of signatures for the return of direct elections of mayors, governors and members of the Federation Council – without any restrictions or filters. The initiative was launched on the change.org website. Direct elections are one of the key points of Yavlinsky’s presidential electoral programme.

According to YABLOKO, voting of deputies of all levels should be open, and the results of a roll-call vote should be published with the indication of their party affiliation. Mass media should specify the party affiliation of deputies when covering their activities. This is indicated in the statement by the YABLOKO Bureau where YABLOKO gave its proposals for regulating the work of factions of political parties on the federal level.
