On the inadmissibility of the use of law enforcement resource in the political struggle in the Republic of Karelia
Statement by YABLOKO Bureau, October 9, 2013
The Investigative Committee of Karelia opened a criminal investigation on unlawful allocation of land in the Prionezhsky region. The criminal case is politically motivated and has absolutely no legal basis under it, it is targeted at removing Svetlana Chechil from the contest for the post of the head of the administration of the Prionezhsky district.
On September 8, 2013, candidates from the YABLOKO party won 58 out of total 109 mandates in the Prionezhsky district. The deputies of the Prionezhsky Council are going to support Svetlana Chechil, YABLOKO party member and acting head of the Prionezhsky administration, for post of the head of administration of the Prionezhsky district.
However, Governor of Karelia said that the candidacy of Svetlana Chechil was unacceptable for him.
Being unable to influence the situation politically the authorities decided to use the law enforcement resource against Chechil.
The YABLOKO party states that such methods of political struggle are inadmissible. Such a way [of ousting a political competitor] undermines the foundations of the state power and causes irreparable damage to the credibility of power. The YABLOKO party demands to close the criminal case.
