Mikhail Afanasyev, a journalist and a Yabloko member from Khakassia, will remain in custody detained until 13 June

The Supreme Court of Khakassia left unsatisfied the appeal of the lawyers of Mikhail Afanasyev, Editor-in-Chief of the online media “Noviy Focus” in Khakassia, and a member of the Yabloko party, against the decision of the Abakan City Court on the measure of restraint in the form of detention chosen by court in respect of the journalist.
A criminal case was initiated against Mikhail Afanasyev under Article 207.3, Part 2, Paragraph “a” of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. He was charged with disseminating false information about the armed forces of the Russian Federation using his official position, particularly in the article published on the website of “New Focus” running that 11 riot policemen from Khakassia refused to go to Ukraine.
The punishment under the article on fakes, taking into account the position of Mikhail Afanasyev, is a fine from 3 to 5 million roubles, or correctional labour up to five years, or imprisonment for a term from five to ten years.
Afanasyev will remain in the pre-trial detention centre at least until 13 June.
