Press release, 16.11.2018
The Committee on Education approved of St. Petersburg Ombudsman Alexander Shislov’s initiative to add Levashovo Memorial Cemetery to the excursion programme for senior students. About 20,000 victims of the Soviet political reprisals are buried there. The initiative was also supported by Yabloko MP in St. Petersburg Legislative Assembly Boris Vishnevsky.
.
According to head pf the Committee on Education, the first excursions will take space in 2018-2019.
It should be reminded that according to the latest survey carried out by The All-Russian Public Opinion Research Centre in October 2018, 19 respondents said they had never heard that people were prosecuted on political grounds in the Soviet Union. At the same time, young people seem to be less informed about the Soviet reprisals than other social groups. Almost half (47 per cent) of the respondents at the age from 18 to 24 replied that they had never heard about the reprisals.
